As a tropical and agricultural country, our country is rich in biomass resources, with plants growing all year round without a break. We should be the first country to break free from dependence on imported fossil fuels—a situation now disrupted by war.
The following is 7 stages development of biomass-based biofuels, you can start at any stage, Climate Teach team ready to assist with appropriate technology solution for it.
1. Raw Biomass Pellets
Loose agricultural or forestry residues are crushed, dried, and mechanically compressed into uniform, high-density cylinders to improve energy content, transportability, and combustion efficiency. TRL: 9 (Fully commercialized and widely traded globally).
2. Char & Hydrochar
Char: Produced through dry pyrolysis (heating biomass in the absence of oxygen) to yield a solid, carbon-rich fuel with a higher energy density than raw wood. Hydrochar: Produced via Hydrothermal Carbonization (HTC), which treats wet biomass (e.g., sewage sludge) in hot, pressurized water (180–250°C), resulting in a coal-like, friable solid. TRL: 8–9 (Char is widely used as an energy source and soil amendment; hydrochar is in first-of-a-kind commercial operations).
3. Syngas (Synthesis Gas)
Biomass is gasified at high temperatures (700–1000°C) with limited oxygen or steam to break down molecular bonds, creating a gaseous mixture dominated by H2 and CO. It acts as a core precursor for liquid fuels and chemical synthesis. TRL: 6–7 (Demonstrated at large pilot and near-commercial scales, though tar removal and contaminant scrubbing remain challenges).
4. Biomethane
Produced via the anaerobic digestion of organic wastes (or gasification followed by methanation), then purified to natural gas standards (up to 98% CH4) so it can be injected directly into existing gas grids. TRL: 9 (Commercialized, with massive grid-injection expansion underway globally).
5. Biomethanol
Synthesized catalytically from biomass-derived syngas. It is a versatile liquid energy carrier and a vital chemical building block. TRL: 6–8 (Pilot and first-of-a-kind commercial facilities exist, with large-scale EU and global projects targeting early commercial deployments in maritime and chemical industries).
6. Advanced Biofuels
Produced by hydrotreating biomass-derived fats and oils or biomass gasification/Fischer-Tropsch. TRL: 7–9 (Green Diesel and HEFA-based SAF are at TRL 9 and operating commercially; FT-based SAF and biogasoline are heavily scaling through operational pilot and demonstration plants).
7. Green Hydrogen
Extracted from biomass via advanced biomass gasification (coupled with sorption enhanced water-gas shift processes). TRL: 5–7 (Demonstrated at the pilot and pre-commercial scale; currently the focus of intensive R&D to scale production and reduce costs).
